Be smart when getting estimates. Contact the movers on your list for additional information and to compare their services. Tell them your destination and the date you plan to move. Get at least three estimates in writing. Reach and clear understanding about the amount of packing and other services you’ll need. Carefully compare each estimate to see which company best suits your needs and budget.

The BBB receives serious complaints about the moving industry-primarily about lost or damaged goods, and final prices that exceed original estimates. Other more extreme complaints essentially allege extortion: An unregistered moving company may hold the customer’s belongings hostage, demanding full payment before they will unload the truck.

To avoid having something like that happen to you, the BBB recommends the following when hiring a mover -ask friends, relatives and coworkers to recommend good movers in your area. Compile a list of movers to check out, and then take the following steps:

Verify Licensing. Interstate movers (within Colorado) must be licensed with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission, which you can verify with the department of Regulatory Agencies at dora.state.co.us/puc. For detailed information, call the Transportation Section of the PUC at 303-894-2000 ext. 4. Interstate movers (from Colorado to another state) need to be licensed with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which you can verify at protectyourmove.gov or by calling 720-963-3130.

Open Me First Boxes

Create “open me first” boxes – Pick one or two boxes per room as “Open Me First” boxes. Put in them the things you’ll need first at your new location. Buy a roll of colored tape and mark each box.

Pack a suitcase – For each member of the family moving, pack a suitcase as if you’re all going on a 3-day vacation, including changes of clothes, medications, eyeglasses, toiletries, etc. Keep the suitcases separated from all the other items to be moved so you’ll have everything you need for the first few days without searching through boxes.

Records – Get copies of your existing records like transcripts from schools, medical records from doctors, etc.

Important Papers – Remember to carry your important papers with you like birth certificates and passports

Packing Electronics

Tip 1 – Electronics can be hard to understand so a picture is worth 1000 words take a picture of how complicated wiring (computer cords, speaker wires) is hooked up. Be sure to use plenty of light and careful focus so the pictures will be clear. Print each picture and put it in the top of the box holding the item. This will make hooking up the items in your new place much easier.

Tip 2 – Cord labels – Get a label maker and label the end of each cord. Then you’ll know exactly which cord you’re seeing and where each end connects when you put things back together.
